This week we are discussing an idea called universal basic income. Under this policy, the government would give every adult a fixed amount of money each month, regardless of whether they work. Supporters argue that it would reduce poverty and help people adapt as technology replaces some jobs. Opponents say it would be extremely expensive and might discourage people from working. Do you think a universal basic income is a good idea? Why or why not?
I think it is a good idea. As machines and software take over more tasks, many people will lose their jobs through no fault of their own. A basic income would give them security while they retrain for new careers. It would also replace many complicated welfare programs with one simple payment.
I am not convinced. Giving money to everyone, including wealthy people who do not need it, seems like a waste. The taxes needed to pay for it would be enormous. I think it would be better to give more help to the people who are actually poor or unemployed, rather than spreading the money across the whole population.
