For years, remote work was treated as a temporary fix, but it has quietly become a permanent feature of modern life. What began as an emergency measure has, in many companies, a deliberate strategy to cut costs and the talent pool. Yet the shift hasn’t been entirely smooth. Some employees thrive when they can and fit work around family commitments, while others struggle to and end up burning out. Managers, too, are having to rethink how they keep teams without hovering. Video calls can help to quickly, but they also pile up and leave people feeling drained. As a result, a growing number of firms are trying out “quiet hours”, encouraging staff to time for focused tasks and unnecessary meetings. Whether this arrangement will stand the test of time remains to be seen, but it has already changed expectations about what a normal working day should look like.
